St. Stephen the Great of Moldavia

Stephen III, Voivode of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504, defended Moldavia and Orthodox Christianity against Ottoman expansion for nearly five decades and founded numerous churches and monasteries after his battles, traditionally one for each victory. He was canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church in 1992 as "Stephen the Great and Holy."
